Into everyones’ life a little rain must fall…

So it’s a rainy Thursday before a long May weekend.  The forecast is looking good for the long weekend which is a reason enough to not be too bothered by the grey day we are having today.  In fact, maybe we should all enjoy the rain today and the excuse it gives us to stay in until bluer skies prevail.  Once the sun comes out on the Victoria Day weekend there will be great expectations for us all to get “things” done.   “Things” like cleaning up the yard, edging and mulching the flower beds, removing the debris which seems to accumulate in our yards over the winter months, mowing the lawn, painting the deck, cleaning the BBQ, getting the patio furniture out…whew!  See I told you, there will be a long to do list once that sun comes out to greet us.  So for now, enjoy the rain.  Grab a coffee (or tea) and maybe stroll through your gardening books, or Pinterest (my latest addiction) at a leisurely pace until we can all get out and get busy!

So here we are again…

Well, another winter has come and gone and we certainly don’t have anything to complain about.  I don’t know if it is just me and a factor of being in my 40′s but time seems to be going by faster and faster every year.  We are a busy household as school winds down and Mabou Gardens ramps up to full speed.  My husband is going at full speed and enjoying the “early” spring weather landscaping and growing and generally just doing what needs to be done.  I am busy working myself and trying not to forget my kids at their various after school activities (abandoning your kids is generally frowned upon…go figure).

I have been having some trouble lately feeling motivated, so I thought I would throw some thoughts out here to see if they find traction.  I am committing this year to putting in a vegetable garden with the kids.  Time got away from us last year and it didn’t happen.  This year we are going to get growing!  I think my 6 and 8 year old boys will be on board and I am looking forward to a modest plot.  Wish me luck and if you get a chance let me know if you have any tips or want to share pictures of your garden.  You can email us at info@mabougardens.ca.  I would love to hear from you…and maybe you can keep me on track!

Anyway, the sun is shining and I have a wash to hang on the line, one of the true signs of good weather as I refuse to hang clothes on the line with gloves on!  We will chat again soon.

Time is Still Flying…

OK so the title is not very original but I am scraping the bottom of the barrel as it is early on a school morning and in a few minutes I am going to have to wake up my kids and begin the morning madness of getting them out the door.  Add to that fact that they have eaten approximately 8 tons of Halloween candy, and it promises to be a less than relaxing start to the day!  This time of year our stores are filled up with wonderful local produce from Nova Scotia.  Apples, potatos, cucumbers, onions, beets, carrots, all grown right here in Nova Scotia.  I wonder sometimes if we really understand how rare it is to eat something that is produced locally.  Take a look at what is featured in local grocery stores, it’s eye opening.

If you get a chance to drop in and pick up some Honey Crisp apples you would be wise.  Honestly, they are crispy and sweet and when you bite into them the juice runs down your chin.  They are quite simply, fabulous.  I have even been able to replace my afternoon cookie break with a Honey Crisp slathered with peanut butter!

Well, time to make some lunches…stay tuned.

Time Flies!

Well, can you believe it, half way through the summer already.  Where is the time going?  The weather this summer may not have been picture perfect so far but I will say this, my baskets look beautiful and are thriving.  Everything looks lush and healthy and gives me a certain sense of satisfaction although I must confess it is JP who looks after most of the gardening at our house!  Our kids started working in the greenhouse this year and that worked out better than we had expected.  After some inital grumblings of child labour laws and such they enjoyed the experience (and the paycheck!).  We just shipped a big load to our Sydney store yesterday, so I hope you can all get out and visit the store.  It’s a long weekend for most and the perfect time to add to your garden.  It doesn’t hurt that the sales are great this weekend too!

Welcome

Well, here we are, if you are reading this it means that we have finally gotten our new website up and running.  Like most things we tackle, it has taken a lot of time (and by that I mean procrastination), and effort.  Gee, that sounds alot like gardening!  Our goal is to keep our website current, with useful information and a glimpse into our family business.  Let us know what you think, and we hope you visit us often!
